10 to 1 Contractors vs. Associates and an improving job market

Does anyone feel the pain? I mean we are already at 10:1 ratio here in IT. That was bad enough. We have been losing a lot of associate domain knowledge/SMEs for existing systems over the last few years. Now we have a lot of contractors deciding to find a better gig and up and leave in the middle of a project. The lack of continuity there is making these projects even harder to do. It is hard to stay positive with so much going wrong and our Sr. Leadership team seemingly still thinking we are in a recession type of job market were contractors are a captive audience. Anyone else?

The contractors may have been told that a contractor furlough is coming so that may be the reason why contractors are leaving. Furlough will begin between now and October.

I agree with the poster here that 10:1 is no joke. It is absolutely true and disgraceful. Also, they stopped hiring from Indian and bringing contractors to the U.S. directly. Now they only hire contractors in the US directly. So these US contractors are not here with the threat of a VISA hanging over their head. They can leave whenever they want. It is glorious in its ability to bit the firm in the a--.

Employer mentality: Contractors are modern day slaves. Work them 10 hr days and weekends

Contractor mentality: Take their $$$ and when the time comes to show results; jump
