Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

WFM needs to get back to basics

Everyone steering the ship has forgotten that this is just a grocery store. It won't change the world and won't change how people think. Every new silly idea won't bring people in. The bottom line is we sell food to people and need to make a better effort to get back to the basics if we are to survive. Put an emphasis on keeping shelves full and offering good customer service.

No one talks about this anymore because it isn't exciting. Every silly marketing push, major event and bloated regional specialist is just theater that takes resources away from doing a good job on the floor. The front lines are what make sales and leadership treats everyday workers like the enemy anymore. People in charge who haven't worked a floor shift in a decade cut labor, cut titles and then demand buying changes while being completely out of touch to the day to day of the job.

The major issue is all of the time and money wasted on things that try to make this place seem more than it is. It is just a grocery store, nothing more. Treat it that way. Sell good food at competitive prices and offer good service. It's as simple as that. Losing sight of these facts is what has put us in the negative spiral we are in. Get your head out of the sand and treat this place like it is, a place that sells food and only then will you see the business turn around.

Until then it will be negative quarter after negative quarter until it goes under or is bought out. Too many quality people have already left and more are to follow unless drastic changes are made now. Cut bloated regional positions, add labor to the floor and price competitively and you'll see sales grow.

Do I really care about whole foods or the job it pays me for doing? Does whole foods really care about me or the work I'm providing? Hmmm...I can be replaced and so can the current leadership. Time to sell!

"Sell good food at competitive prices and offer good service."

WFM can't compete on price. It's antithetical to the brand, which is strong because people perceive WFM to be a high quality, high price grocery store. 365 is your management's attempt to move away from that, slowly. It probably won't work - it's easier to discard a brand and start anew through acquisition than to pivot on a dime. So until the stores start bleeding out to online competitors, they'll continue to bleed out at a slow pace. Then management will shut them down one day when the ROI on the real estate for each store is optimal.

@NbIwnTB-aag - there are no "attacks on John Mackey." just the cold hard truth of a failing business. who cares what you did in the 80s and 90s? its f---ing 2017 and WFM is quickly going down the drain. not to mention constantly lying to TMs about the state of the company....nice "leadership"

I have been making that very statement for years. Every company gets "caught up" in fads and gets away from the basics that made them successful. I do not agree with the attacks on John though. He started this company with a great vision and core values. Seems the company started falling apart when Walter Robb was put in charge and John went silent. There is a cost to doing business. They have to get a certain percentage to give us the pay and benefits we get so we can't compete with Walmart but by cutting the top heavy positions that is where we could gain labor dollars to use in the store where it belongs. Those dollars can cut prices and give us more labor. We should never go back to the old labor though because way too many people took advantage and did nothing but walk around and chat with co workers.

That's why a buyout will be the only solution.

top down inept management is how we got here. it is very cool that they don't think we are a grocery store but that really doesn't matter when you have (wait for it)......grocery stores competing with you. the market chooses you, you cannot choose the market. too bad John Mackey is as terrible at capitalism as he is at leading and organizing an efficient business.

Exactly! Well said. Whole Foods has done this to themselves...it's not that difficult to see what the problems are. I have personally never been impressed with anyone at the regional level...overpaid and totally unnecessary as far as I'm concerned. Cutting at the store level is not the solution....lower prices, get with the times as far as technology is concerned and get rid of the incompetence at the top.
