Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Are things really that bad?

I'm considering changing jobs and applying for the new Whole Foods Market opening in January in Exton, but reading all the posts here and on Glassdoor has me reconsidering that idea. Is the situation really that bad at Whole Foods? Should I stay away? Sorry if this seems off topic, but not sure where else to ask.

Get out of retail entirely. BUT if you must work retail, think about Costco or Sam's Club. It's all full-time if you want it and those outfits are at least competitive. I knew a dude who worked at TJs and their business is booming so there's good advancement opportunity, plus they work a lot of different hats so there's more variety. He liked the company. Also they all drug test so you won't be working with wasteoids like I had to. One TM I worked with came in and he was just baked every day and did absolutely nothing. I suspect that many of the regional drones were also substance abusers -- defensive, arrogant, always accusing others, totally inaccurate much of the time. They also dropped little "hints" in their conversations and documents about being high. True story.

Organic Budda and "Do you respect others and expect the same? Do you have strong morals and principles? Do you want to be belittled and micromanaged? Do you like to work in a hostile environment?" Comments are closest to what I experienced. It is not a good environment unless you like being mistreated. Then by all means work there. You will see for yourself.

It’s the best retail job that exists.

Eh, depends on the company and position. Bottom of the totem pole retail pays garbage. A manager at old navy makes 60-70k. I’ve had TLs easily pull 50k. I’ve been trying to leave Whole Foods for a while now and have been getting interviewed left and right. Major insurance company desk job, major hotel chain management position, even teacher in my area as I have a degree - all would be a pay cut for me as a TL.

If you don’t have a degree or trade-skill set and all you’ve known is retail then it’s not bad. Benefits are tolerable if you’re somewhat healthy and only need the occasional doctors visit or catastrophic event coverage. The wages are higher than most, but I live in a state where most places go by the federal minimum wage and cost of living isn’t high. Opportunities to move up are present if you can tolerate a lot of BS and micro managing. As a TL myself, I just focus on the happiness of my team through the changes. We help each other at. If you move up the pay is alright. You won’t be making bank, but it’s a decent living for retail. All things are relative.

If it’s gotta be grocery retail, wfm isn’t all that bad. Could be worse.

If you're just looking for a gig it's pretty great as far as retail grocery goes. That being said it's a lot different from what it was. It used to be a company you could grow with, but due to corporate hubris they're being forced to do a lot of restructuring now. Amazon's ownership is exacerbating the dramatic changes. That's why you see all the complaining.

What dept/position are you looking at?

Quite frankly! Do you respect others and expect the same? Do you have strong morals and principles? Do you want to be belittled and micromanaged? Do you like to work in a hostile environment? Think carefully about these questions. I have spent about 12 years of my life with this company and no longer do. I hope this helps you in your decision making. Good luck!!

Let's just say you would be better off working for Walmart with the way things are headed. And no, that is not an exaggeration, I left WF for go work for WM and at the interview they took my experience into account and offered me full time and a higher wage. WF refused to give me full time because "it wasn't in their budget." WM isn't great per se, but at least I can pay my bills on time now.
