Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

It is true that there is life after Whole Foods, but...

I left after the better part of a decade, for all the reasons we have beaten to death on this site.

I do feel better in a lot of ways, just by removing myself from a dysfunctional, toxic environment.

But I'm here to tell all you disgruntled TMs that the grass is not always greener.

For starters, it is hard to find a job that will pay close to what WFM pays, especially when you've been there for years. And yearly raises are not guaranteed. Health insurance is meh but that's not enough of a reason to leave WFM.

Then there's job security. You don't get "voted on" at any other job. This means you actually have to show up, work hard, and do a good job because you can get fired instantly anywhere else. WFM is great for slackers (and bad for those who actually GAF), because once you're voted on, it is nearly impossible to get fired unless you are habitually late or do something really really stupid (stealing, grabbing p_$$y, drinking on the job, etc) and even then we all know you still might not get fired if the bosses like you.

If you are just a bad worker, there will be months of write ups and counseling before they can actually fire you. You can look busy for a shift or two and save your job. And you can even get promoted if you're a p___ grabbing, drunk, worthless worker!

Sure, the shoppers can be awful, the company itself is so dysfunctional and mismanaged that it seems like a messed up social experiment, and store closings/layoffs are ever-imminent. But as someone who left, I'm here to tell you to s--- it up. Everyone at WFM feeds off each other's stress and catastrophizes every little thing. Drama drama drama. But quitting is not always the answer.

Find a way to rise above the nonsense and gain some perspective. It's a grocery store. There are worse jobs and frankly most of you have it pretty easy. Life after Whole Foods is pretty much the same as life at Whole Foods: it is what you make it.

As far as retail goes, wfm really isn’t that bad. After I finished school in 2015 I left wfm and got a regular office job, and let me tell you, wfm is not that bad lol... I do have casual fridays which I guess is nice.

Just want to thank all those tms who drank all the hippie koolaid for so many years. As an stl, it does my heart good seeing all those idealistic faces during store meetings, knowing you all will keep working for less than you are worth because youve been told the company is doing good paying fair wages to people in other countries. Hey, at least you arent working for walmart, amirite? And thanks for dealing with customers while I do all the hard work at my desk. You rock!

LIFE IS better for anyone who makes a goals for himself and takes the necessary steps to get there, it’s only a matter of time .

I was in wfm for close to 7 years. I had those terrible positions of bulk buyer, and similar level positions. I quit because there was just so much politics in my locations to move up. Now I’m an assistant manager at at one of the few apparell retail company’s that are actually making doing good in this economy. It only took me 16 months to move to supervisor, then asistant manager. Making more money then I did in wfm. I just had an interview for general manager; it didn’t go to well but they are really encouraging and pushing for me, so I ll have another opportunity in a couple months! So I plan on working on my feedback, and I know eventually I will have my own store and make a decent living making atleast 50k. It’s crazy thinking I worked in wfm not even 2 years ago, and now I’m interviewing for general manager and really managing people. A lot of fun and great experience working there

Well said, its a job, do the work, get paid, go home, enjoy some love life laughter, its not worth stressing over, especially if you have only been with WFM a few years.

It’s not like it use to be for sure but this is the way the world works. The rich get richer and the low level people that keep the machine running have to scrape to get by. It definetly has gotten much less pleasant to work at WF in recent years though.

After having spent several years working at other grocery chains before coming to Whole Foods, I agree that this isn't nearly the worst place to work. If nothing else, your hourly rate versus what is expected of you is pretty small compared to other retailers. Going into my sixth year at WFM, i definitely agree with OP by saying the job is what you make of it. Try to get yourself a work husband/wife, it makes the days go way faster.
