Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Notice period acknowledgement

I'm not sure where to even begin with this. The policy we are now being asked to acknowledge goes much further than just required notice periods. Depending on your salary grade/title, we are now required to agree that 30/60/90 days notice is required if you resign or retire. Any benefits you might have been eligible to receive are now off the table starting from the day you submit notice. You are still obligated to work for the length of the notice period but won't receive your bonus and I'm assuming 401k match if the payout is scheduled during that notice period. If they decide they don't want to keep you during the notice period, they will even stop salary payments from the day they walk you out the door. If you don't sign the acknowledgement, you lose the possibility of getting a bonus for this year.

But they still keep sending those surveys which usually have a question about whether you would recommend BNY Mellon as a place to work. My answer to that is a big fat NO.

I wouldn’t give “required” notice. I did to remain bonus eligible after a very full year and was shafted with zero bonus.

They don’t view employees as assets. Employees are viewed purely as expenses.

You are wrong… Robin and his exec team DO care about the survey responses.

What you fail to understand is that they want people to be so miserable that they leave. The more that the surveys indicate job dissatisfaction, the more likely that employees will self select to leave. This means that they pay no Sub money, pay none of your stranded 401K matches and they also generally walk away with no bonus.

Robin is a genius, but a devilish genius for sure.

I have sooo many issues with this garbage agreement and have spent the better part of an hour reading every last word to make sure I understand how they are going to sc--w me. Love how they say I can seek an attorney to review it...because sure, everyone has a personal attorney waiting.

I really don't want to sign this!!! Is it really just bonus they would withhold if you don't sign? I don't put it past them at all to retaliate.

It’s fair to ask people to work hard and be loyal to the company.

But in return they need to show some honor.

Astute folks noticed that, a few years back, the company switched the age at which you could retire (with 10 years of service) from 55 to 60 without losing an unvested RSUs.

They didn’t grandfather in anyone. So people who had operating for years under that promise had the rug pulled out from under them. They were expecting to keep those RSUs, a nice supplemental income stream for the first few years.

Mark my words, they will eventually move it to 65.

Good companies don’t focus sacrifice their employees so consistently to make up for the shareholder return that their strategies and execution should be delivering.

To the person asking what keeps people here. For me, I’m in my 50s… Disgusted by corporate America, in general… Although the dump is worse than most. I’m just riding out my time, & any more doing as little (extra) as possible …….

When I decide to leave, if they want to make me give 60 days notice… So be it. I’ll work from home the entire time and do nothing and collect the paycheck.
It’s the environment they have created
Paybacks a bi--h.

The faster you learn that you cannot trust any benefit here, and that you must escape to a rational company, the better you are.

What the heck is still keeping people here from leaving?

I agree 100%. Individual managers have no authority at all except being in the position of having to try to enforce policies pushed on them by senior executives (whether or not they agree with those policies). I've already reached retirement age so this has minimal effect on me except maybe timing so I get my 2023 bonus and matching 401k. But I really feel badly for my co-workers with younger families - many of whom are very hard workers and have a lot of years invested with the company. Employee loyalty is certainly not matched with loyalty/appreciation from senior executives.

Robin and his exec team know what the surveys say, and they don't care. Look out for yourself and your best interests because dedication and hard work are not rewarded at this Bank.

This is such BS. I wish that I hadn’t given far more than the proper notice when I left. I followed the good leaver policy, picked up extra weekend projects for coworkers all because I cared and also to remain bonus eligible.

No bonus after a 3000 hour year. Yes, worked every weekend. BNYM is by far the most dishonest employer for which I’ve ever worked. Not a single honest leader in NY.

I really don't understand why they do this to their biggest assets - employees. You treat people poorly and don't take care of them, they go and you lose talent. It's such a simple concept that management just doesn't care about. Money is the only driver. I used to love it at BNYM. I've been lucky enough to have all sorts of good people in my corner and on my teams. The further down the road I get, the less I'm inclined to want to stay or to recommend this place to work. There are good companies out there who take care of their people, I have seen it firsthand and they are thriving companies. Happy or not in this company, I would recommend starting to look elsewhere. They have clearly shown they don't value their employees.
And if you have a manager that does value their employees, their opinions or knowledge is completely vetoed by the decision makers above them. It's really sad.
