Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

How to get RIF’d, not fired?

Will appreciate serious advice on how I can land on the list of RIF candidates without pushing it so far that I get fired.

@105 this is a blanket statement. We both know it's about who is willing to work for free. And it really shouldn't be.

If you are good at what you do. And you do it within your contracted hours you shouldn't be on the list. I know many highly talented people that are on the list - and you know why? Because they set a boundary with their manager. They said this is my job and I have done it. I have a personal life and I won't be doing work.for free.

Managers are used to yes people. Even if those people are actually incompetent. Managers have huge ego. They would rather have an incompetent yes person than a highly talented person who sets boundaries.

That is the problem with mdt. You know it. Don't blame poc. It's pathetic. Poc are usually working three times harder than anyone else just to have a seat at your daft table. Yet you are the first to throw them under the bus.

@qn Wrong. POC in general -including Asian orientation- get a star so that riffing them only happens if it can't be avoided. Granted, you're not as high up on the protected list as blax, but you have a special consideration. Even women have it worse off than you.

@mf what about asian men (exclude Indian here), we're on the list first.. not you; especially in mdt - we're the biggest victim of mdt - diver$eFucation.

@fr totally true. I'm a high performer on every team I have been on. Whenever I talk to my manager about my salary not matching the level of work being allocated to me - I make it on the rif list.

I've been on the list 4 times - and gone through the process. I've ended up in different departments because I'm still highly skilled. I accept the job. And after 3 months I ask for a raise - and guess what? My manager gives me the raise.

Its only after the first year the manager gets comfortable with the whole - let's give her the work of 4 people. And that's when the issue starts. Managers need to be realistic. I do my job really well - don't reward me with more work. I have a life outside of this company.

Be a white male in a team of dIvErSe people. I'm not even joking. 9 times out to 10, you'll go first so the manager doesn't have to defend themselves from being called racist.

Talk to your manager about applying to other positions within Medtronic. Have a serious discussion with your manager about your pay and how you feel it's too low. Once they know you're not happy in your current role, you're more likely to get RIF'd. Also, if you have any concerns about your manager or one-over manager, escalate those issues. Managers don't want want those people around. They can't fire you as that would be retaliation but they can RIF you with no repercussions.

@d0 The heifers in MN are the biggest drain on this company, next to Goff. MDT needs to bite the bullet and fire all of these b{_}ms that think they have protected government jobs for life.

That is an easy one.
Make your work seemless, with a ton of documentation. Get your work done early and ask if there is more work. If there is going to be a RIF in your group, there will be a lack of work to go around.
You can also make a complaint about a Vice President. That worked for me. :(

If you try getting yourself fired you'll more than likely get a raise. Medtronic is the "office space" of employers. It's not possible to be fired. Go ahead... break the rules, be rude, ignore your work, mouth off to your boss, come in late, leave early, steal from the company... they will promote you!

Please don't leave. The rest of us are getting crushed by the workload.

@d0 I don't know who is coasting, but our group is ki-ling itself to all the work done.

I did my job well for 15+ years and dodged 5 RIFs in that period - until the last one.

I wasn’t looking to be on the list, and my manager cried as he told me the news with the HR guy tried to redirect back to the script.

I know several people closer to retirement who asked to be on the RIF list and were denied.

I was in management at Medtronic, and I know that doesn’t work. The company will not be put in a position of increasing someone’s salary under threat of them leaving, or granting requests such as to be RIFd, or on the VERP list, because that sets a precedent (that those are options for the asking).

Don’t ask, do your job and hope.

@d0 everyone on my team has the responsibilities of two full time jobs because Medtronic refuses to staff properly in order to maximize profits. Get out of here with that coasting nonsense.

Tricky question. If you get RIF'd or Fired. You'll need a new job, Might as well keep looking for a new one and just coast and collect like most of MN employees. IDK.

Probably don't want to be part of the list, companies have been bias towards the people who have been laid off. Some will interview you just to get insight on your work history at Medtronic. Apply and interview until you can get an offer elsewhere, GL.
