Is anyone actually required to pay back severance if they get hired at a new company? That’s how the contract reads as to me

Only if you get hired back at Nike during the period that the severance covers.
For instance, when I got laid off, I got 6 months severance. I was told by People Solutions (what a joke of an org) that if I were to come back in 3 months, I'd have to pay back 3 months of severance. 2 months in, I'd have to pay back 4 months. Etc.
But once you clear that period, you're good.
And no, you absolutely do not have to pay back severance if you get a job elsewhere (although I'm not a non-compete expert.)
Not at all. I was in a new role a month later. You only pay it back if you are rehired at Nike. The only stipulation that was communicated to me is if it was a direct competitor I had to let people solutions know and get approval- even without a non-compete.
not at any other company but if you get a chance to join Nike back.
