Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

I don’t understand the idea that too many people took the VSP offer

Every applicant is subject to approval. So they can control the numbers regardless of if more or less people applied than anticipated. For them to change the notification date by that much, I think there is something more going on.

@ej as we were just told in a meeting the lay offs are not affected by how many take the VsP

@bc LOL! preach!
I was like "did I write this one?!?" because it sounds exactly like I've been telling my family/friends.

it's been RAH RAH RAH, WE'VE SET OURSELVES UP FOR SUCCESS...DUALS DUALS DUALS.
apparently, SL "misspoke". lol!

"they hitched their wagons"...indeed they did

they've been nothing but transparent. Until early/mid 2025 when I figured out they were doing the complete opposite of being transparent.

I think they changed the deadline so that it coincides with "the call" at the end of July.
They'll have actual reduction in workforce numbers and it will be basically "bragging rights"...which will make the stock soar even more. It's at 67/share, with a target of $70/share. about 50% rise since 01/01/2026.

the actual layoffs are gonna be (even more) all over the news. It may make the stock soar (like it keeps doing), but the company will not be looked upon favorably. Plus they have to deal with all the WARN stuff & unemployment payouts.

@ae - As I understand it, VSPs aren’t necessarily going to prevent or reduce RIFs later this year. It's all very concerning.

@az Not odd to me Sarah wasn't the one that sent the email. Message had to come from Chief People Officer as Sarah does not have a vision for Centene's future where 'Humans' aka People are important.

Simple they don’t want to part extended separation wages for that many individuals. They were expecting to have to lay a portion of them off without that extra pay. So now we shrink the number applied and layoff they others in upcoming rounds of layoffs. With the information provided Friday that Medicare is expecting 40+% cuts to MAPD and 25+% to DSNP there is not other expectation that can be realistic. With the losses coming the projections floating on here seem legit between 15-20% of staff losses. After spending all year telling staff we were safe and they had protected us through blah blah blah…. They hitched their wagons to this administration both in rhetoric and donations and they got what they paid for, I guess they weren’t paying attention. I have no respect for this organization anymore. Their idea of transparency is to at the ninth hour disclose that everyone is in jeopardy. This is going to be the longest three weeks ever.

@ac Odd that Sarah isn’t the one who sent that email. Has to be a reason for that. Just one more (hopefully last) little thing to mess with us. I can’t wait to be free.

@OP Thinking it’s a good thing for those who didn’t take it, right? If they reached their goal, it means fewer layoffs moving for forward 🙏🏼

“The person at the top has to own everything that happens.” - Sarah London June 2023

Couldn’t agree more.

So who owns moving VSP determinations from July 15 to July 27… one day before earnings?

Drew used an interesting analogy in April 2026: “Our slate of initiatives on both revenue and medical expense are bearing fruit as we continue to navigate an elevated behavioral health and high-cost dr-g environment.”

CenTeamers apparently became produce (let’s run with Drew’s idea use oranges in the analogy I’ll continue below).

“When our membership shifts, we need to shift our organization.” SL in June 2026

Translation: the CenTeamers are self-squeezing oranges. Management will continue squeezing until there’s nothing left, delay the count until the day before earnings, then call it “leadership.”

@a4 That makes sense. You are probably right about the legitimacy of it. Given all the shenanigans lately, I’m probably overthinking it.

@OP My thinking was that they were surprised by the deluge of applications they received over that two week period.
"What??? You mean to tell me that people actually WANT to leave in light of an awful business decision??? HOW COULD WE EVER SEE THIS COMING???"

  • shocked Pikachu face*😂

most of us concluded that those voluntarily leaving would have a better severance package vs. involuntarily based on what we were told.

there shouldn’t be a difference in the severance package at all regardless if we make the choice or not. that’s where they messed up.

with a surge in applications, there’s more cross checking, more having to move people who are staying, and determine who’s still being laid off. which means more time is needed for discussion.

I applied knowing I’m the only one in my position on my team. what I’m hoping is they will pluck someone else in a similar role who didn’t apply, so I can leave. but the higher ups just can’t be like move ID 123456 to replace ID 987654. they have to talk to PLs.

I don’t think there’s anything sinister at all. they don’t want to f*ck things up more than they already have.
