Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

@jv pre Covid, no one cared about cameras. Policies change if our competitors are doing it and equates to better productivity. I don’t see it as micromanaging since the entire company has to comply. Taking it personally or expecting a choice, we won’t get one for all changes. PTO was the last big debate and changes were made.

@g6 Some of us have been wfh for years without cameras and without issues. The concern with a sudden shift to mandatory camera use doesn’t make us ungrateful. It makes us frustrated with a company that wants to micromanage all instead of addressing individual performance issues.

@g6 what’s funnier is that you think there’s some sort of connection to being on camera and being an effective meeting participant. Are you on camera when you call your cable company about your bill? If not, how on earth do you get anything done? Is every cell phone call with your family a FaceTime call? Combing WFH and camera use is incongruous.

You can get your manager or director fired by reporting them along with a screen shot as evidence.

Easier than reporting those that coffee badge

@fr laid off, why give severance for insubordination. Termination is more like it.

@fv Use the camera to check your nose for hangers

You all crack me up. First you constantly beg for full time WFH, and when you get it, now you don't want to be on camera. So ungrateful.

@ec The camera policy might not be a huge issue on its own, but the bigger problem is the pattern of executive leadership treating the company's employees like children and justifying their decisions with BS talking points and evasive statements rather than being candid with us regarding the reasons for the policy changes. At this point, we have no reason to take anything they say at face value because leadership has demonstrated that they will do anything they can to avoid accountability for their actions.

Post a pic of your pet's butt hole in front of those stupid cameras.

Haven't been on camera. No one seems to care.

Ask your managers if you can be laid off for not turning on the camera. If a camera is needed because there’s no trust, then the issue is with management.

Leadership is saying it is “to improve morale”! Make everyone feel connected! like this is your home! Do not want to see your peers!

A few words away from “work is your family” rhetoric. Live! Laugh! Love!

@ec why are you for it? Wfh means I don’t wear a suit. And making me be on camera means you think I’m not doing my job so you have to micromanage me.

@ec because the network can't handle it? I was in a medium-size meeting today. Everyone was on camera, but I couldn't follow anything because the audio was cutting in and out at random. Everyone I asked had the same issue so it's not only me.

@e3 No, emails have been distributed stating everyone must be on camera for meetings- regardless of where you are. Mangers and above are required to be on camera for any and every type of meeting or activity.

We have been told numerous times we do not have the bandwidth to have everyone on camera at once. We barely have the ability to have large teams meetings.

Anyone on the call can take a screen grab of all people and who has their camera on and send it directly to the HR representative…its easy to enforce. Have you camera on for all meetings.

e3 The policy says employees who have cameras must have them turned on during Microsoft Teams meetings. (It does not say Webex meetings) This is to make sure people are engaged in meetings, virtual training sessions, etc.
Everyone will have them. This expectation exists for in office staff as well as work from home staff. When you’re on camera you’re less likely to let your mind wander. We will get used to it. Other companies have been doing this for years.

I find it extremely distracting when people are on camera. I spend the majority of the time making sure I don’t make a face that could be taken the wrong way or that I don’t look uninterested so I end up not focusing on the actual meeting. Our appearance has nothing to do with job performance and I don’t believe there is any value in cameras.

@OP This was probably a directive from senior leadership and not a unilateral decision. They’re signing my paycheck so I just follow their guidelines. Even being full-time remote, I do my normal routine. That includes getting dressed. I put a decent shirt on for any meetings where I need to turn on the camera.

@ec I agree. I don't prefer it but I honestly could care less about it being required.

Why are you all against turning on your camera?

@ap Do you interpret that this requirement applies only when working at home? So a flex employee needn't be on camera for Teams meetings on days they are in the office? The purpose section specifically indicates WFH.

@ap reasonable but for what end? So I can see counterparts in other states? Maybe for clients or vendors but not internally.
I remember in covid they didn’t want you using video because it was ki-ling the network.

I agree with the other poster - just a complete lack of trust and micromanagement.

@ad they can track it technically. If someone doesn't like you they will selectively hold it against you

@ap why do we need to? It’s just more micromanagement control cr-p.

I believe that the ask is to be on camera during meeting, which if you are wfh, seems reasonable.
