My manager just kinda informed us in a soft way that the budget is tight and layoffs are probably pending. She says that I am a corporate employee but I am working under a states plan. When layoffs happen, do corporate employees get cut too or that particular plan.

ExxonMobil plans to cut its low-carbon spending by a third, the latest sign of a pullback on decarbonization across most big oil companies. In its latest corporate outlook, Exxon raised its 2030 targets for earnings and cash flow each by $5 billion. That should be possible without new capital spending, the company said. But it will require low-carbon spending to fall to $20 billion from $30 billion, following what CEO Darren Woods described as lower-than-expected customer demand and less supportive government policies.

Hydrogen is among the divisions on hold, a trend across the industry, which has put more than 60 hydrogen projects on ice this year. Overall, oil majors’ green ambitions have mostly failed to pan out: Shell and BP, which pushed ambitiously into lower-carbon business lines only to pull them back, have seen their share prices fall to a deep discount relative to their US competitors.

How we keep hiring in flashy new areas while cutting basic tools we rely on every day? It makes no sense and the teams that keeps this place running feel constantly undermined. A lot of people are openly frustrated because the decisions seem driven by appearances, not reality.

So here’s the story, folks. This company, a very smart company, didn’t care about security for years. Total disaster. Then bo-m! They get hacked. Suddenly, they “find” all this money for cybersecurity, like it was hiding under the CEO’s golf clubs. Now they’re bragging about their “massive investment” in security and even rolled out a shiny new “promise to customers”. Very touching, very emotional stuff. But behind the scenes? They cut the budget for training the people who actually use and develop the systems. Brilliant strategy! They say it’s about protecting customers, but everybody knows it’s just about protecting their image. “We take security very seriously,” they say. Sure they do. About as seriously as they took it the day before the breach. Sad!

Due to budget cuts within the program I supported, my position—along with around 20 others—was recently eliminated. Over the past several months, the environment had become increasingly stressful as I noticed our team size steadily shrinking, so while this change was difficult, it wasn’t entirely unexpected.

On 10/23/25 approximately 5% of Marymount’s staff were laid off. Reduced federal grants, reduced international students, and reduced graduate enrollment were cited. Anecdotal evidence suggests the actual percentage of cut staff was higher. Staff across all support areas, including finance, the library, research, HR and student support were all eliminated to help close the budget.

The cuts were probably done to fund the sales they are having this year for Early Black Friday deals to draw traffic back into stores

As we continue to feel strains and increased costs as a company perhaps looking at top exec costs would help cut off some of that. Are there business travels at that level that are really needed or lunches for those in those positions that really need to be paid for? How are leaders paid more and advancing levels when others are not? How many additional senior leaders do we really need? Our members need to be able to reach live, direct workers. Happy employees lead to happy members and business which organically leads to overall better business. Telling associates benefits are more, AIP is less, and growth will not really happen is tough for lower ranking associates. I wonder when that piece of the puzzle will be realized by the business. Further consider these associates are also members trying to make it in the world today.
