Commercial Winddown

Hearing some pretty heavy rumors this week that a major downsizing is headed our way for the commercial aviation teams. Honestly, it looks like Starlink’s recent wins have completely eaten our lunch, and to make matters worse, our hybrid LEO/GEO antenna is apparently having consistent technical issues with no fix in sight. Since the team hasn't been able to secure any more funding to iron out those hardware bugs or land any new customer contracts, management's strategy is basically to cut the division down to a skeleton crew just to sustain what's left. Does anyone hear the same rumors?

CM Dept

Anyone in CM ever been put on coaching for "failing" a SOFT audit? I truly think mgmt is trying to get us to quit or fire us for "not meeting expectations" before VSP takes effect. Centene has truly turned out to be a grimy place. I will spend the rest of my days encouraging people to avoid working here & avoid signing up for their plans.

Evicore folks

Are we getting out now or riding it out and seeing what happens? Trying to decide if it’s better to jump ship now or wait and see if they clear house if/ when we are sold… maybe can get a severance that way but then will be competing with others looking for jobs at the same time

Dan is simply stripping the company and preparing it to be sold

Seen this a hundred times. Massive layoffs, but useless mid manager and c-suites are mostly retained. No real stock value injection attempted.

It is a tired strategy, one used on so many brands in the past. The goal is not to bring the company back to its former glory. The goal eventually is to shop to other rising companies.

Verizon lost. T-Mobile handed us our hats.

Life after Uniondale?

For those affected by this site closure happening end of summer- whats your plan?
Going to city?
Looking for work elsewhere?
Already found something else and much happier where you are?
Retirees good for you congratulations 🎊 but this is directed toward those who cant retire yet. Thanks

This company is a joke!

You are only a number… don’t assume anything makes you safe. The current leadership has 1 priority… Slash and cut.. no master plan, no vision. the AI talk is all a cover to layoff and do stock buybacks.. Best of luck to all impacted today and the ones to come…

Ready to own your role?

Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds this phrasing offensive? They're plastering this phrase on every corporate email like a proud child showing off their finger painting. I think it smacks of condescension from the higher ups. Like we're not taking our jobs seriously enough or working hard enough. Also, we don't "own" anything here as evidenced by the fact that they're cutting us loose at every available opportunity. You want buy-in from the employees? Give us job security and fair compensation and benefits, not patronizing emails.

Update Tuesday was good color, Cuts

Citi logged about $800 million in severance expenses in the first half of the year and may set aside more for the second half, executives said Tuesday.
The New York-based lender had about 219,000 employees as of the second quarter, down about 5% from the year-earlier quarter (230,000 employees), and about 2% from the first quarter (224,000), according to a second-quarter earnings presentation.
“We may look at accelerating some of the structural efficiency actions and, in that case, take more severance in the second half,” Citi CFO Gonzalo Luchetti said during a conference call with analysts, declining to provide more detail. “If we see opportunities, we may do a bit more than we originally envisioned.”

Arvind announced his retirement

Now that I have your attention..,

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna tries to run a tight ship, but his legacy is famously marked by aggressive restructuring, massive stock plunges, and replacing human brains with AI.

Oh, Arvind Krishna sat in his chair,
With billions to make and a plan to prepare.
"Let’s fire some humans!" the CEO cried,"
And sweep our old mainframes all to the side!"

He gazed at the servers, the cloud, and the code,
While trimming the headcount along the dark road.
He aimed for the future with bright, shiny eyes,
But instead of a rocket, the stock took a dive!

He promised us Watson would cure every ill,
But the clients just yawned and refused the red pill.
When large deals all stalled at the end of the year,
He wrote us a letter confessing the fear:
“We failed to adapt, yes, we faltered quite fast,
And seventy billion just vanished at last!”

So here’s to the boss who replaced us with bots,
While hoarding his millions and tying in knots.
Just remember to breathe when your mainframe goes down,
And King Arvind smiles from his deep-learning crown.

UnitedHealth beats earnings expectations

UnitedHealth reported Q2 earnings this morning, and it’s worth looking beyond the headline. Digging in we see:

Highlights:

  • Revenue: $111.6B (+14%)
  • Adjusted EPS: $6.38, well above expectations
  • Medical Loss Ratio: 86.7%, better than expected
  • Raised full-year guidance
  • Continued emphasis on improving the quality and profitability of the book of business, even if it means fewer members.

Official results:

The contrast with Centene couldn’t be much clearer. Both companies are dealing with membership pressure. The difference is that UnitedHealth is framing fewer members as a strategic choice in pursuit of a stronger operating model. Pricing, product decisions, analytics, AI, clinical execution, and disciplined growth all appear to be moving in the same direction.

Centene has spent the last year talking about Mission Simplify, reorganizations, buyouts, cost discipline, and a smaller organization. The stock has rebounded sharply from last year’s selloff, but that’s regained investor confidence… not necessarily proof the operating model has materially improved. It’s easy to look at the stock price this year vs. same time last year when it was in the dumpster.

The key takeaway and where the focus should be: Healthcare is no longer a game of who has the most members. It’s become who can generate the best outcomes with the members they have. With me so far?

Both companies will definitely end up serving fewer people. The difference is whether that’s the result of a stronger operating model… or simply a smaller organization. Both companies are getting smaller. UnitedHealth is treating it as a strategy. Centene is trying to convince investors it’s an opportunity.

And then there’s AI. UnitedHealth isn’t starting from scratch. While they’ve been embedding analytics and AI deeper into the operating model, Centene was very slow out of the blocks… and it has spent much of the last year restructuring, reducing costs, and trying to regain its footing. That’s a lot of ground to make up as AI becomes the next competitive battleground. Maybe they have the core competency internally, but I’ve never seen it, and you definitely can’t outsource it.

One of Centene’s guiding principles the past couple of years, “We do what’s right, not what’s easy.” The easy part was making the company smaller. The hard part is proving it became better.

The stage gets much bigger on the 27th. That’s where leadership has to show investors that Mission Simplify wasn’t just about reducing costs, but it’s resulted in a fundamentally stronger company. That’s what the market will be listening for. I’m not very optimistic they’ll pull it off.

State Funds Boost Schools Facing Cuts

Governor Maura Healey has proposed legislation to allocate an additional $100 million to local school districts. This funding aims to mitigate teacher layoffs and other budget reductions experienced by many communities. The money will be distributed based on projected student enrollment for the upcoming academic year. Funds are derived from anticipated revenues generated by the state's Millionaires Tax. This proposal requires approval from the state Legislature.

Hello from a December layoff

Hello to my fellow 'soon to be ex' V-Teamers. I was laid off in Dec 2025 with a role of Sr. Technical Project Manager (6V). Unfortunately, with all of the lay offs, in VZ and elsewhere, finding a new job has been next to impossible. Both my severance and pitifully small unemployment have both been exhausted. The LHH service they set up for us did not help me in the slightest. I say this not to scare you, well, maybe a little, but to tell you you need to set reasonable expectations. You are most likely going to be in this for the long haul. For those left behind, continue to create as much of a nest egg as you can because you are most likely going to need in when the next round of lay offs happen.

Good luck and God Bless.
