The question I have been asking myself for years

I used to think that liking your job was a normal expectation, something that most people could reasonably hope for. After spending so much time in this place, I am genuinely not sure anymore. Is there an assumption that we are all just supposed to tolerate our work and find our fulfillment elsewhere, or am I actually supposed to enjoy what I do for eight hours a day?

The hours of my life I will never get back

I have been calculating my commute time lately, and the numbers are depressing. I spend about ninety minutes in the car every day, which adds up to more than an entire workday each week just sitting in traffic. I am curious what everyone else's numbers look like. How much of your life have you lost to driving since we were forced back into the office?

LinkedIn named Shell the best place to work in Houston! Congratulations Shell!

I wonder how .... just how they could have concluded that!!! Has anyone ever filled out a survey for this? Does anyone know the metrics? Amazing news, but I don't fathom how this can be.

The Law dept

I saw a thread that said that the most dangerous person in a toxic workplace isn’t the bully - it’s the leader who watches the bully and calls it a personality conflict.

Back in 2017 - 2020 or so, there was a bully in the Law Dept. She stabbed everyone in the back and the front and told bald faced lies about everyone.
Leadership did nothing about her reign of te---r - in fact they chalked all of her shenanigans up to “personality conflicts” and “misunderstandings” when the evidence - emails, calendar invitations, personal interviews - all clearly showed that she was a liar and actively working to undercut colleagues and direct and indirect reports with her Machiavellian ways.

Sadly Aflac didn’t address the bully - only supported her and drove out many excellent lawyers in a mass exodus once they all realized that their concerns were being swept under the rug, with full cooperation and support from senior legal dept leadership and Hr.

Once they realized the full extent of her decimation - everyone leaving - this person was eventually promoted to a new role in the business to get her out of the Law Dept and then eventually was moved out of the company once a business area with guts had the nerve to address her.

It’s disappointing that the Law Dept couldn’t address a blight upon their department and instead had to have many high performing attorneys leave for other roles before the awful lady was addressed.

I dare say that those in the public should know how the law dept leadership runs - saving their own skins and sacrificing their top performers to save face and not taking responsibility or accountability for how they run things. It’s sad.

One more sleep until Monday morning!!!

Can't wait to get to work tomorrow. Such a fulfilling job where I feel valued. It is great knowing my work is part of the future plan and I am contributing to the overall success of VZ. I'm so excited that I won't be able to sleep tonight. Set the Foundation!!! Love your company!

What's worth fighting for here besides a paycheck?

People keep telling me that should be enough. We've just accepted that we have to take the uncertainty, the disrespect, the constant stress, all so we can pay the bills. But that's not actually enough. We spend most of our waking lives at work, often doing overtime, and there's no meaning to any of it beyond the money. Is it any wonder people are burnt out and hate their jobs?

Move on if you can, it'll make all the difference

I was in a rut at Ford. Not unhappy enough to leave, not happy enough to stay. I was basically stuck. Then I hit a wall and realized I couldn't do it anymore. The day I walked out, I felt lighter than I had in years. My new role has its own problems, but I don't dread Monday mornings anymore. It comes down to whether you put life before work or the other way around.

I feel like the work life balance has completely

Been nixed here.
They are so much into push push push never fast enough do more do more have less time to breathe. It’s awful lately
I had great expectations for this career and each year gets more grueling and demoralizing.
Add the RTO FT and even the layoffs small in number are devastating. I don’t think I can keep up this pace.

That Employee Survey

First question on the latest employee survey: Are you happy at Ally? (Y/N). This is a loaded question that will be used against you. If your manager in any way suggested/encouraged that you complete the survey and you answered this question, you pretty much own Ally. That question is asking about your psychological health. Ally has absolutely no business asking you to disclose anything about your mental health. In fact, the practice is illegal under federal and state employment laws.

Gas price relief?

With gas prices rising at an astronomical rate, I've heard rumors that T is considering lowering the in-office average for the summer months to 2 days a week. Obviously this would be amazing for all of the employees who are suffering with increased cost of living across the board. Is there any truth to this?

Charlotte Office Filthy

Can we not do better here? If you want people in the office, maybe push a vacuum or dust once in a while? Office is so filthy we itch when we come in, cups and coffee are few and far between. No working water dispensers in any floor currently. Reserve space covered in grease from prior persons lunch…Thanks USBank for return to office bacterial frappe :(

Don't be so negative! Don't work too hard and collect the paychecks!

It is a good place to work. Hear me out. The senior slackers and butt kissers have taught me well.

  1. It's a job with decent pay and benefits, but it's just a job.
  2. Put in the 35 hours a week. Don't milk it too much. Even if you work at McDonald's, you have to put in the hours.
  3. For those hot projects and rushes, put in the 40 to 45 weeks. Possibly, a weekend too. Collect the kudos, high-fives, and pats on the back; these will buy you slack when you need it. Don't forget to give some back too.
  4. No matter how you really feel. Just act friendly. Put on a fake smile and say hi. Don't be anti-social. Go the extra mile and ask if they have plans for the weekend or ask them how their weekend went. Pretend to care.
  5. Don't feel like going into the office for a few days. Want an extra day to recover from that long fishing weekend? Let your manager know that you've come down with something. Tell them that you don't want to come in and share it with everyone and that you'll work as much as possible from home. Even if you can, don't work those long hours at home. Put on a good act for a good show.
  6. Want to go home early. Let your coworkers and manager know that you're not feeling so well. What can they say?
  7. Don't be shy; give your co-workers and manager a kudo once in a while. Even if it's just a thank-you. It's an easy way to brown-nose.
  8. Dress decent. Dress for success. Dress for the job. Don't be a slob.
  9. Don't install the company apps on your phone. Trust no one.
  10. Never do personal stuff on your company laptop or devices. Do it on your own device. Don't give them the chance to track your activities.
  11. Never give bad feedback. Always pretend that all is positive.
  12. Always attend your meetings; this includes the company-wide ones. Never know who's tracking attendance.

Now you know how others survive, even if they have poor skills and are clearly not performing.

It's an easy ride. Enjoy it!

Now go to work and put on a good show. I do, and you can too! Practice makes perfect!
