Montefiore Nurses Union Alleges AI Job Replacement

The New York State Nurses Association alleges Montefiore Health System plans to replace nurses with AI. The union claims 12 utilization review nurses are slated for layoff. These nurses use their clinical judgment to review insurance denials. Montefiore denies the union's claims as inaccurate and misleading. Concerns include compromised patient care and potential data privacy issues.

Unemployment Fear Shifts to Wealthier Americans

Unemployment fears are now concentrated among educated, higher-income Americans. This marks a significant shift from historical patterns. The New York Fed's Survey of Consumer Expectations tracks this trend. Their anxiety currently outpaces actual white-collar layoff rates. Automation and post-pandemic hiring corrections contribute to this growing concern.

PDM?

Anyone have any suspicions as to how Provider Data Management teams across the company will be affected? My team (Wellcare Medicare of Connecticut) was already cut significantly once in 2024 because we exited the Vermont market then, and this year we were combined with Maine under one manager.
Without us and what we do, providers can't get enrolled, credentialed and paid, and members don't know who they can even go to see, so I'd say we serve a very critical function. But I know that means little to nothing at the end of the day in all of this. My manager has already said that if she has any say in the cuts at all that me and one other person are definitely not going, but obviously no guarantees that she will have any authority there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

In case you haven’t figured it out yet

Humana, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, we do not like you.

If you would simply recognize those very bad middle level leaders in Associate Director and Director roles that pushed out some of us extremely good employees and fire those bad leaders, then maybe we would stop filing lawsuits against you, and stop bad mouthing you to the press and general public.

Get rid of those je-ks, those bad leaders, and we will relent. Make sure somehow it gets back to is when it is done. Thank you.

Restructuring has already started

Many new positions over the last few months have came up doing the same exact jobs that are already in place. QMCA’s were implemented that replicate member advocates, case managers, and patient care advocates.. they are doing the same work leaving older employees with a smaller almost nonexistent caseload. These positions were implemented earlier this year and the last hiring wave ended in June. I feel like the new hires are safe. They are keeping the new positions and getting rid of the old.

Failed Executive VPs Still Get Rewarded?

Employees get laid off, while failed Executive VPs walk away with generous severance.
According to Qorvo's Executive Severance Plan, eligible Executive VPs may receive: • 12 months of base salary • Target bonus • Pro-rated annual bonus • 12 months of COBRA • Continued equity vesting for one year
Meanwhile, many employees receive much less after years of hard work.
If the company is struggling and layoffs are necessary, shouldn't the executives responsible for the business results be held to the same standard as everyone else?

Just the facts

I'm not getting all those discussions whether it's now over, the wfrs. You don't listen or what?

We are only two thirds through the costs savings program. One third is still ahead of us. Source: CFO, Q3 investors call.

Do you think one third can be achieved by forcing us to bring our own toilet paper to work?

Profit growth of 10 percent is only attributable to the wfrs. Source: same. Yes, that's the way to huge profits! What else?

P/E ratio is between one third and one half of industry peers. OT is profitable. Normally investors must be queuing up. And still no one wants to buy? Haha, "our investors are patient, they give us time" (source: was that Ayman in the last show?)

Our most important asset is people. Important is attracting good talent and keeping good talent. Source: all hands town calls, those clowns with E- and C- titles. Who of course kick the best people out. Do you really believe them? See a doctor.

Trust no one but yourself. If you do not have financial buffer, start building it now. Start looking for alternatives. Many postings here can be made by those who want you go by yourself, to save on severance. You do not have to, but just make sure you are prepared.

PIP first or surplus first?

Anyone else feel like management has been trying to build a case against them after a reorg?

My org has gotten really toxic. I’ve been hearing PIP talk, but I honestly don’t think they have enough to put me on one yet. My past mid-year and year-end reviews have been strong, my attendance has been good except for a few system issues, and I know my job well. It just feels like leadership decided they don’t want me around anymore.

If you’re in this situation, is it more likely they’ll eventually fire you for performance, or would you end up getting surplused first? Or maybe a PIP is a way to set the ground for a surplus (as a way to tell HR “Look, he is on a PIP because he doesn’t work very well, so he is our chosen duck to target for the layoff).
Curious if anyone has gone through something similar. Is it possible to fight it?

These initial layoffs primarily affect non-clinical roles such as coding, billing, and scheduling. Clinical jobs are not expected to be permanently replaced by AI soon. There's no need for a layoff

There's no need for a layoff when they are firing everyone everyday! Less than 200 North American frontline customer service agents and less than 100 MCO agents, once a upon a time there were thousands of agents and now everyone is being let go everyday due to a plan make it make sense! These are tenured agents 8 years etc of service and all of a sudden they cannot maintain metrics and that's not fishy? I would look into filing a formal complaint if you feel you have been discriminated against and let go. Sad times at Wayfair.

The Wells Invasion

I’d like to get everyone’s thoughts on Wells Fargo leaders that are taking over in technology. Starting with Steve Hagerman down as old BB&T and SunTrust leaders are pushed out they’re being replaced by folks from Wells Fargo. They keep hiring their friends from Wells for HUGE money and most of them are getting exceptions to work remotely even they are enforcing the policy that all new hires need to be in a Truist office. They seem quite toxic leading by fear and are turning our culture into the terrible culture they created and left behind at Wells.

You won’t like this, but

These are not layoffs. They are mass firings of low talent hangers-on or irrelevant departmental deadweight that pretty much needed to go and probably wont be missed. Like MD or AR, or your coworker who never quite got it. Why does CDW do it this way? Because our power-hungry CWS department has both ears of our lawyer CEO who is terrified of lawsuits. They won’t let managers fire people along the way that are incompetent, underperforming or bad cultural fits, so the business becomes filled with dead weight and weakened operationally, and bad people are pushed around to different teams or ignored. And it causes the business to run like cr-p. Then every year or 18 months there needs to be a house cleaning. It’s true and it’s really a pi-s-poor way to run talent in a talent-dependent business. Oh, and think you want to go to a PE owned company like Presidio or similar? Good luck. If you are weak, slow or ignorant, they will cut you faster than you can say “at will employment” and its why they are always hiring. They also rate leaders on how fast they can get rid of bad people. But that approach has an ironic “intended” consequence: Minimal layoffs, and true destination workplace because the talent is top notch. The type of people you want to work with. The thing is, at CDW, we did lose some dolphins in the layoff tuna net who were never managed correctly, but that is the very rare exception. There are also some great people at CDW, but this will never be a talent magnet because of how talent is managed. LCD.
